Hammer’s Pix
By Steve Hammer
First of all, my apologies go to ANN McWILLIAMS for not devoting this entire page — hell, this entire issue — to her. The wonderful singer/songwriter has quite a bit of activity in the next week in connection with Sister Luna and the Diamond Stars, her excellent new CD. On Friday, May 11, she’ll host a CD Release Party at the RATHSKELLER from 7 to 11 p.m. On Saturday, she’ll join JENNIE DeVOE and DEANNA as performers at the MILLION MOM MARCH at the VELODROME. If that wasn’t enough for one weekend, she’ll be playing at the BROAD RIPPLE ART FAIR at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. She’ll also play Wednesday, May 16 at the FITNESS DAY on the CIRCLE. MEME (YUNI’S new project) and JOHNNY SOCKO will also play.

Wow. One hundred and thirty-five words on Ann and I didn’t even mention her radio show, THE CITY OF MUSIC RADIO HOUR, which airs at 8 p.m. Wednesdays on WKLU (101.9 FM). After the show airs, there’s a live performance at ROCK LOBSTER hosted by the show. This week’s performers will include THE MARY JANES and MOE Z. Look for more on Ann and City of Music in the near future.

Otherwise, it’s shaping up as another great weekend for live music. 7 DEGREES FROM CENTER and KEITH MORRIS will play at the MELODY INN on Friday night. WEAPON X, SIDEREAL, FALLEN, DRIPSTONE, L.I.U. and STEEL TRAP will hold it down Friday at FESTIVILLA. I like all of the bands I’ve heard on that bill.

My favorite venue in the city, THE VOLCANO ROOM, has an über-cool show Friday, with SPICOLIE, FIVE STAR THEORY and BOYS LIKE TO SCARE YOU. SPICOLIE is a band that keeps getting better and better. If those shows don’t grab you, check out the always-great SINDACATO at BIRDY’s or JOHNNY SOCKO at the PATIO.

On Saturday, SPLATTER PUNKS and THE 100s will be at the PATIO. The VOLCANO ROOM will host ATOM AND HIS PACKAGE and HAR MAR SUPERSTAR; WORLD MARDI GRAS will feature X-RAY ROGER JIMMY and the FOUNTAIN ROOM will host the BLUE MONKEY SIDESHOW. Capping things off will be THE HYPNOTIC VELVET PROPELLERS at ZANIES TOO.

Of course, you’ll never go wrong with BIGGER THAN ELVIS (every Friday at RADIO RADIO) or GENE DEER (every Sunday at ZANIES).

And there are a few midweek shows worth noting, especially the great GUIDED BY VOICES show this Wednesday, May 9 at BIRDY’s. Also, watch out for Glen Phillips from TOAD THE WET SPROCKET at BIRDY’S on May 13. My current faves, BUCKCHERRY, will be at Birdy’s the next night, May 14. And DAVID LINDLEY will be there May 16. Be there or be stupid, because BIRDY’S is fast becoming THE local hotspot for music.

At the last minute, our friends at SFX came through with a bunch of show announcements, including some biggies. OUR LADY PEACE will play at THE EGYPTIAN ROOM on June 15. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS will be at VERIZON on July 21. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 9 a.m. The lovely JANET JACKSON will play CONSECO FIELDHOUSE on Aug. 7. Tickets for that event go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. And tickets for the July 18 BARENAKED LADIES show at VERIZON go on sale at 10 a.m. this Saturday as well.
